She served as the first chair of the United Nations commission on human rights and oversaw the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The many treasures comprising the sculptural border my portrait of Eleanor includes a collection of Franklin Mint UN children, vintage figurines represent her contributions to women's rights. Her love and compassion for nature and conservation are represented by the squirrel and deer figurine. The artwork, commissioned by Judith Chung's daughter, Grace, is a tribute to her mother. Judith Chung purchased an old gift shop on West 32nd street and transformed it into a pharmacy, where Grace's sister could work as a recent pharmaceutical school graduate. The small pharmacy evolved into several department stores, symbolizing Judith Chung's entrepreneurial spirit and success. To emphasize this narrative, I placed a recycled mortar and pestle at the top center of the piece. This object, once used for grinding and blending ingredients in a traditional sense not only visually enhances the portrait but also serves as a powerful symbol of Judith Chung's determination and accomplishments throughout her life. It opened a decade before Manet painted this painting in 1882 and was one of the most popular music halls and places of entertainment in Paris. My version of this famous artwork shows most of artworks major details plus some that I added especially in the border of the piece. The background shows a fashionable crowd on the balcony entertained by musical and circus acts below. The pair of green feet in the upper left-hand corner belong to a trapeze artist who is performing above the restaurant's patrons. Another attraction at this Parisian café were the barmaids, who were assumed by many to be available as clandestine prostitutes. The barmaid facing us is a reflection and she is talking to the stranger in the top right corner. The red triangles on the bottles also represent the very first officially protected trademark in the United Kingdom, registered to Bass Brewery 1876. For example, the figurine of the artist at the bottom of piece represents Vermeer. The snails at the top represent the fact Vermeer worked very slowly and produced relatively few paintings in his lifetime. I used paint tubes to showcase that he used very expensive pigments in his works. Vermeer worked and lived in Delft all his life which is represented bythe two Delft ceramic houses. There are many women in the border because his paintings mainly portray women. Vermeer and his wife moved in with her wealthy mother, represented by a figurine of an old woman in the top right, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life, His wife gave birth to 15 children. 11 survived into adulthood. The skier represents an expensive ice boat Vermeer bought for his children which was recorded as part of his debt. The Kaw's Mickey Mouse-like character, Companion, is surrounded by many Pop culture cartoons Kaws has appropriated in his artwork. Each has his signature X-ed eyes and hands.
