DOROTHY

mixed media collage

46”H x 32” W 3”

The latest addition to my mosaic assemblage series of iconic women reimagines Dorothy emerging from a rainbow with a basket of banned books, inspired by Banksy’s “Stop & Search” 2007.” Ceramic figures around her quietly read their own banned books, forming a collective stand against censorship.

The piece also nods to the surprising history of The Wizard of Oz itself, which has been repeatedly challenged and banned for having too strong of a female character and witchery.

I collected vintage figurines and altered their book covers to reflect titles from the most-banned book lists. As an example, the duck glancing over his shoulder, reads 1984 by George Orwell—a book challenged for its stark portrayal of a totalitarian regime.
